If you are a solo travel, don’t be afraid because this island is also suitable for you! This ultimate road trips guide in Jeju Island is just for you!
Last January, I got to visit the Jeju Island and did road trip by renting a car all by myself! I love solo travel because it give me so much freedom to choose where and when I want to go. (See my post on Solo Travel- Santorini, Greece here). It was so pretty and worth every penny that I spend. So, below are the ultimate road trip guide for solo traveller in Jeju Island.
1. Book a Rental Car Online and enjoy up to 75% Discounts!
First of all, we need a car for the road trip in Jeju Island. I booked online because it was much more cheaper compared to book at the airport. I used Lotte Rent a Car because this company provide up to 75% discounts if we create an account and register with them. Besides that, they have english speaking staff which is very helpful for those who can’t speak Korean. They also provide english language GPS-which is very important because we can’t use google map in Jeju, as well as provide free shuttle bus from the airport. It only cost me RM440 for 4 days rental including insurance.
2. Visit Emerald colour Hamdeok Beach
I love Hamdeok beach so much because the emerald colour ocean was so pretty!It is a must visit place for a road trips in Jeju Island. Beach lovers can relax and enjoying a cup of hot coffees at the nearest local cafe. The cozy cafe has a deck overlooking an arched bridge over a black basalt at the edge of the beach. Other than that, many people don’t know that they can take a walk to hills, using Seowoobong walking trail, situated just beside the beach to enjoy the great views from above. here
3. Visit Dongmun Traditional Market
Dongmun market is the most popular traditional market in Jeju Island. Local vendors selling inexpensive various goods from local fruits, daily clothes to wide varieties of souvenirs. This market is a must for travellers to engage with locals as well as enjoying cheaper street foods and buying a much more cheaper local chocolate for souvenirs! For road trips in Jeju Island, this market is easily accessible by car.
4. Cozy drive and picturesque view along the way to Hallasan Mountain
For a non hikers, I would say that climbing Halla Mountain is a big tough for you, but visit Hallasan Mt is a must for a road trips in Jeju Island! Along the way to the mountain, you can stop everywhere to take a beautiful picture. The view is so amazing despite of every season you visit. Stop your car at the rest area 1100 Altitude Wetland Nature Discovery Trail. From here, take a walk to explore beautiful nature- autumn foliage or snowy mountain or frozen fond and even catch a glimpse of Halla mountain! 1100 Altitude is the highest point off the road which is 1100m above the sea level. This walking trail just on the way to the Hallasan Mountain, so please don’t forget to stop.
5. Cosmetic Souvenirs at Innisfree Jeju house
Girls, if you are a fan of K-beauty cosmetics, this place is a must for road trips in Jeju Island. Innisfree is widely known as a cosmetic brand using natural ingredients from Jeju Island. Here you can testing their products as well as joining their soap making class from natural ingredients. You can make your own mask packs too! Not to mention, they also have a cozy cafe that serving various pastries and beverages overlooking wide green garden. They sell cosmetics here in souvenirs packaging, so don’t forget to buy it for your girl friends!
6. Tea History at O’Sulloc Tea Museum
Located just beside the Innisfree Jeju House, this tea museum overlooking the enormous green Seokwang tea fields. This museum provide info about Korean tea tradition and its history by displaying tea wares and utensils used from Joseon Dynasty period. There are local cafe that serve delicious matcha ice cream inside and you can enjoy it by sitting at the table overlooking Korean indoor garden. It’s so Splendid! There is a view deck upstairs to observe the tea plantation too! They provide a lot of free parking space, so no worries on where to park your car.
7. Shopping Paradise at Jungang Underground Shopping Store
This is the only underground shopping mall in Jeju island where you can shop from various brand of K-beauty cosmetics, clothes, shoes, jewelries, accessories as well as eating delicious Korean food because there are a lot of restaurant choices here! The prices are so cheap especially cosmetics because they sell in bundle. You can buy for one year stock of cosmetics! They also provide tax refund machine here if you need one.
8. Sinpung Sincheon Bada Mokjang
Many tourist doesn’t know about this beautiful place. This is a ranch that overlooking a beach and during winter, you can see carpets of tangerine peel. The orangish view before the ocean is so amazing. You can also catch a beautiful sunset here. Most importantly, this place is only accessible by a car.
9. Catch Sunrise at Seongsan Ilchulbong
It is easy to see the sunrise here if you self-driving because you need to depart early from your hotel. Seongsan Ilchulbong itself means sunrise peak and it is one of UNESCO world heritage. There are hiking trails consist a lot of stairs and steep trails to go all the way up. Be warn that, it is quite tiring to climb all the way to the top, but the view is amazing and worth it. You can see a huge crater from the top and high cliffs. There is verdant grassy hill that connected to Seongsan village- place where women divers working.
10. Watch Haenyeo Show
You can see Haenyeo or Women Divers show from 1:30pm to 3:00pm at Seongsan Village. It is located just below the Seongsan Ilchulbong. Take the walking trail all the way down to Sea Women Restaurant. These women divers diving under the sea to collect shellfish without using oxygen mask! Amazing isn’t it? Besides, some of them even ages around 80s!. here
11. Hipster Cafe and Restaurants alongside Woljeongri Beach
This is a kind of place that you can stop for a lunch before continue on your road trips in Jeju Island. There are a lot of hipster restaurants and cafes alongside the white sandy beach that provide views of blue ocean and windmills. Moreover, you can also relax sitting on a wooden chair and sip a cup of lattes and taking a lot of instagrammable pictures.
12. Enjoy Beautiful Coastal Scenery at Seopjikoji
Seopjikoji means a narrow cape. This place provide a walking trail that overlooking beautiful coastal view with full bloom of yellow canola flowers in spring. Besides that, there is a wide greenfield spread around the cliffs and you can see a lighthouse on the top. It is also famous filming location for several Korean movies and dramas.
13. Visit Seongeup Folk Village
In Jeju Island, there are a few of folk village and you definitely need to visit at least one of them to know more about their cultures. This Seongeup folk village located near Hallasan mountain displays a lot of cultural assets such as local craftsmanships, native foods and many more. It is like a small town line up with native homes build in a park. Along the way you will find rock statues such as Harubang- famous grandfather stone statue in Jeju Island.
14. Teddy Bear Museum for Adult
This Teddy bear museum is not only for kids but believe it not it is also suitable for adults especially if you are a fan of Korean drama “Princess Hours”. This museum display various types of unique Teddy Bear characters from Queen of England to NASA astronauts. Oh, not to forget that they have a human size Einstein teddy bear too! The admission fees is 10,000KRW and it is located to near one of the famous waterfall- Cheonjeyeon waterfalls.
15. Lava Tunnel at Manjanggul Cave
Manjanggul cave is another UNESCO heritage in Jeju Island which is 1KM lava tube tunnel. You will be walking inside the cave tunnel. Beware that It is quite dim inside and sometimes the floor is wet. You need a waterproof shoes for this. I would say this place is more suitable for people who enjoy geological things. Outside the cave, the are several local restaurants where you can eat before continue your road trip in Jeju Island.
